Activities

The fishing village Arugam Bay is surrounded by an incredibly nice scenery with untouched beaches, rice fields, national parks and lagoons. The woods situated in the hinterland, where elephants, crocodiles and monkeys live in the wild offer wonderful insights into the “Wildlife” of Sri Lanka. Arugam Bay is a starting point for numerous activities and tours.

Surfing

Experienced surfers, surfing beginners as well as body surfers find optimum conditions in Arugam Bay. Up to 400-m-long waves can be surfed in the “Reef-Point”. Beside “Peanut Farm” in the South and “Whisky Point” in the North there are numerous other surfing districts with optimum waves and a fine sandy beach. Many surfing districts are to be reached comfortably with the Tuk Tuk. The best holiday season for a surfing vacation lies between May and October. We will gladly organize a surfing teacher and the necessary equipment.

How to get to the Arugam Bay

Sri Lanka has two international airports. On the West coast of Sri Lanka, to the North of Colombo, the Bandaranaike Internationally Airport is situated. The distance between the airport and Arugam Bay amounts to approx. 330 kilometers. Since 2013, there is another international airport in the Southeast of the island. Close to Hambantota lies the Mattala Internationally airport. The distance between this airport to Arugam Bay amounts to approx. 170 km. However, the airport is currently served only by few airlines. With increasing tourism, the air traffic will certainly intensify during the next years.

From Colombo to Arugam Bay

By the car: The direct way from Colombo to Arugam Bay runs along the A4 and lasts approx. 8 hours. You can also rent a taxi directly at the airport..

By the bus: There is a direct bus connection from Colombo, Pettah Bus station, at 5 o’clock in the morning, to Pottuvil, a small town very close to Arugam Bay. From here it takes only five minutes with the Tuk Tuk to Arugam bay. The whole journey amounts to approx. 10 hours. With the local bus the journey is approx. 12 hours. Here you must change and take the bus to Monaragala. From Monaragala, a bus goes to Pottuvil. From Pottuvil to Arugam Bay you need five minutes with the Tuk Tuk.

From Hambantota to Arugam Bay

It takes about 3 hours from Hambantota/Matara to Arugam Bay by car– by bus it will take a little longer.
